Quality links to your site - Advice Directly from Google

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Here is the direct link to this article http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/06/quality-links-to-your-site.html

A popular question on our Webmaster Help Forum is in regard to best practices for organic link building. There seems to be some confusion, especially among less experienced webmasters, on how to approach the topic. Different perspectives have been shared, and we would also like to explain our viewpoint on earning quality links.

If your site is rather new and still unknown, a good way marketing technique is to get involved in the community around your topic. Interact and contribute on forums and blogs. Just keep in mind to contribute in a positive way, rather than spamming or soliciting for your site. Just building a reputation can drive people to your site. And they will keep on visiting it and linking to it. If you offer long-lasting, unique and compelling content -- something that lets your expertise shine -- people will want to recommend it to others. Great content can serve this purpose as much as providing useful tools.

A promising way to create value for your target group and earn great links is to think of issues or problems your users might encounter. Visitors are likely to appreciate your site and link to it if you publish a short tutorial or a video providing a solution, or a practical tool. Survey or original research results can serve the same purpose, if they turn out to be useful for the target audience. Both methods grow your credibility in the community and increase visibility. This can help you gain lasting, merit-based links and loyal followers who generate direct traffic and "spread the word." Offering a number of solutions for different problems could evolve into a blog which can continuously affect the site's reputation in a positive way.

Humor can be another way to gain both great links and get people to talk about your site. With Google Buzz and other social media services constantly growing, entertaining content is being shared now more than ever. We've seen all kinds of amusing content, from ASCII art embedded in a site's source code to funny downtime messages used as a viral marketing technique to increase the visibility of a site. However, we do not recommend counting only on short-lived link-bait tactics. Their appeal wears off quickly and as powerful as marketing stunts can be, you shouldn't rely on them as a long-term strategy or as your only marketing effort.

It's important to clarify that any legitimate link building strategy is a long-term effort. There are those who advocate for short-lived, often spammy methods, but these are not advisable if you care for your site's reputation. Buying PageRank-passing links or randomly exchanging links are the worst ways of attempting to gather links and they're likely to have no positive impact on your site's performance over time. If your site's visibility in the Google index is important to you it's best to avoid them.

Directory entries are often mentioned as another way to promote young sites in the Google index. There are great, topical directories that add value to the Internet. But there are not many of them in proportion to those of lower quality. If you decide to submit your site to a directory, make sure it's on topic, moderated, and well structured. Mass submissions, which are sometimes offered as a quick work-around SEO method, are mostly useless and not likely to serve your purposes.

It can be a good idea to take a look at similar sites in other markets and identify the elements of those sites that might work well for yours, too. However, it's important not to just copy success stories but to adapt them, so that they provide unique value for your visitors.

Finally, consider making linking to your site easier for less tech savvy users. Similar to the way we do it on YouTube, offering bookmarking services for social sites like Twitter or Facebook can help spread the word about the great content on your site and draw users' attention.

As usual, we'd like to hear your opinion. You're welcome to comment here in the blog, or join our Webmaster Help Forum community.

Letting Go of the Words: Writing Web Content that Works (Interactive Technologies) (Interactive Technologies)

Review

the book meets a major, previously unmet need of a very large audience: almost everyone who works on a web site. As Ginny points out, good writing is a critical success factor for every web site, and the really good book about how to write for the web just doesn't exist. Personally, I've been waiting for it for years, because I didn't want to write it myself."
--Steve Krug, author of Dont Make Me Think! Redish has done her homework and created a thorough overview of the issues in writing for the Web. Ironically, I must recommend that you read her every word so that you can find out why your customers won't read very many words on your website -- and what to do about it --Jakob Nielsen, Principal, Nielsen Norman Group

Review

"Redish has done her homework and created a thorough overview of the issues in writing for the Web. Ironically, I must recommend that you read her every word so that you can find out why your customers won't read very many words on your website -- and what to do about it."

-- Jakob Nielsen, Principal, Nielsen Norman Group

"There are at least twelve billion web pages out there. Twelve billion voices talking, but saying mostly nothing. If just 1% of those pages followed Ginny's practical, clear advice, the world would be a better place. Fortunately, you can follow her advice for 100% of your own site's pages, so pick up a copy of Letting Go of the Words and start communicating effectively today."

SEO Prodigy at New York SES

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

SEO Prodigy paid a visit to the Search Engine Strategies conference in bustling New York City in March.  Despite the economy, the conference was very busy and full of energy.  While there was a great volume of information presented, here are a few keypoints we are bring back home:

1.  Rank reporting maybe dead, but SEO is live and well

2.  Facebook is a rising star

3.  Twitter for traffic

4.  Your Marketing Budget is tight, what do you focus on?  Not print ads, billboards.

What To Do When Content Gets Copied?

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

You create some good content and it gets copied by other people - well, its a common problem that most of us face and we discussed how to get links from your copied content in one of our earlier posts. However, for those of you who would like to know if there are other options to deal with such situation, here are some more tips.

How you can find if your content has been copied ?

Easiest way is to use Google. Just a copy a complete sentence from your article and search for it in Google by putting it within Quotes ( " " ). This would show all the pages that has got exactly the same sentence. The only disadvantage of this is that if the pages that caryy the copied content are not indexed by Google they wont show up in the result. However, if they are not indexed by Google, why should you bother about them ?

What to do next ?

a) Once you find who have opied your content, you can contact the webmaster and ask them to put a proper link and credit note for your website as the original source if you are ok with sharing the content.

b) If you don't like to share the content, you can ask them to take down the content from their website.

c)If they do not oblige, you can file a DMCA ( Digital Millenium Copyright Act ) with Google. You can get more details on how to file a DMCA request at http://www.google.com/dmca.html. Google would investigate the issue and would take the copied content off their index.

d) You can find out the hosting provider for the website that has copied your content and file a complain with the hosting company. Some hosting companies have strict guidelines on copyright infringement and might take down the website but this doesn't happen too often and most hosting companies are not much bothered.

d) As a final step, you can take help of your lawyer.

Hope this helps :)

WeFollow - Now You Know Whom to Follow on Twitter

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Twitter has been one of the most popular and spoken about platform for all Internet marketing professionals and for some firms like JetBlue and Skittles, Twitter has actually been very effective. While Twitter has got a huge population and you can probably find the who's who from all fields it often becomes difficult to decide whom to follow.

Kevin Rose has now created a nice directory of Tweeples ( people in Twitter ) organized into categories called WeFollow. The home page of the site shows top 5 people for popular categories like celebrity, music, actors etc. The right hand side of the page shows a list of all the other categories ( tags) for which they have such a list. Digging down to any of these categories would show the list of people listed in them.

The categories are decided based on the tags that people add and so there is no definitive list of categories. The popularity of categories is decided based on the total number of followers in a particular category and accrodingly the categories are listed.

Also the Tweeples are listed by the number of followers they have and the more  number of followers you have the higher up you go in your rankings.

Its pretty easy to get listed in WeFollow , all you have to do is to send a message as

@wefollow #YOURTAG #YOURTAG #YOURTAG

replace "YOURTAG" with tha tags that you want to associate with yourself like blogger, seo, internet marketing etc.

It is indeed a nice tool however this being a user generated tool doesn't have any restriction, that is , even if you are not a SEO you can add the SEO tag in your message and the directory would list you as a SEO.

WeFollow is not perfect yet and it would be interesting to see how it evolves going forward.

Best of luck Kevin !

Google’s Shows Image Results on Home Page

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

If you have read about Universal search and think I am talking about the integration of image search results into the organic results, you are not completely right. Today a friend of mine forwarded a link from Google.co.kr that shows some images related to the search query listed on the right panel where we are typically used to see the Adwords ads.

While I initially mistook them for Adwords ad ( as I couldn't understand the language), I tried testing a few other keywords and did see the same phenomena and trying with some of my own websites I noticed images from my site showed up in the right side though I never placed ads with Adwords.

A translated version of the page in English revealed that Google is using the right panel to list image results, Blog results as well as items from Google News.

Preventing Virtual Blight : Fantastic Presentation by Matt Cutts

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

In November 2008, Matt Cutts spoke at the Web 2.0 conference in San Fransisco on preventing virtual blight. Like most of Matt's presentations its a simple but extremely useful presentation that most webmasters must go through. With the increasing number of black hat attacks and hackers adding to it at times it is important for the modern webmaster to be aware of the possibilities and how to prevent them. Now that Matt has decided to share this, we have it here for our readers.

For those of you who do not have much idea about virtual blight, a subjective idea about it would be the decaying process of the web. As in urban blight the city gets into a decaying phase with increasing prominence of negative activities in this case the general standard of web gets compromised and con artists of the web like the spammers and hackers contribute to it.

Blogs being spammed?

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

I hate it when people find ways to spam useful tools and content. Blogs are immensely popular these days, and wordpress and blogger are just a few examples of good free blogging interfaces. Due to the popularity of the blogs, Google and other search engines usually provide a better link juice and Search Engine positioning for these blogs under their target keywords/industry.

However, this is being exploited on a large scale, and you can find millions of useless blogs that only have one common aim: Get links back to the website. Of course, Google is not stupid, neither are other Search engines. They simply demote these link oriented blogs. But I am more concerned about the integrity of free blogging platform providers like Wordpress and Blogger. Spam blogs usually waste a lot of disk space, and even though some of them are found by the administrators, most of them go unnoticed. I have personally seen a blog that had 9 posts, of which each blog had less than 50 words, and stuffed with anchor text dotted around by useless names. I will not link to the blog and make it popular; still, you can indeed find these blogs on a daily basis.

Make sure your blog is being found by the community or the people you are targeting, and make sure that your blogging platform is active. Even if you don’t get links initially, be patient and blog often. A few bloggers rarely get any back links, as their blogs are intended at providing information to their family, relatives and friends. For those people, make it a point to visit your blog at least once a month, or face the problem of deletion. Oh, who cares, we can go ahead and create another one, but that is where the problem lies!
