WeFollow - Now You Know Whom to Follow on Twitter

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Twitter has been one of the most popular and spoken about platform for all Internet marketing professionals and for some firms like JetBlue and Skittles, Twitter has actually been very effective. While Twitter has got a huge population and you can probably find the who's who from all fields it often becomes difficult to decide whom to follow.

Kevin Rose has now created a nice directory of Tweeples ( people in Twitter ) organized into categories called WeFollow. The home page of the site shows top 5 people for popular categories like celebrity, music, actors etc. The right hand side of the page shows a list of all the other categories ( tags) for which they have such a list. Digging down to any of these categories would show the list of people listed in them.

The categories are decided based on the tags that people add and so there is no definitive list of categories. The popularity of categories is decided based on the total number of followers in a particular category and accrodingly the categories are listed.

Also the Tweeples are listed by the number of followers they have and the moreĀ  number of followers you have the higher up you go in your rankings.

Its pretty easy to get listed in WeFollow , all you have to do is to send a message as

@wefollow #YOURTAG #YOURTAG #YOURTAG

replace "YOURTAG" with tha tags that you want to associate with yourself like blogger, seo, internet marketing etc.

It is indeed a nice tool however this being a user generated tool doesn't have any restriction, that is , even if you are not a SEO you can add the SEO tag in your message and the directory would list you as a SEO.

WeFollow is not perfect yet and it would be interesting to see how it evolves going forward.

Best of luck Kevin !

Twitter Search to Come Soon

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Twitter is probably the most successful micro blogging platforms and has now become a way of communication for the early adopters and technology enthusiasts. While it has managed to have an annual growth rate of more than 700% and continues to grow this popular platform did not have a revenue model.Till date the service was supported by USD 22 million of venture capital.

Recently in an interview with The Times, BizStone, one of the co-founders of Twitter declared that Twitter plans to integrate search functionality on the home page for about 1% of the users and depending on the feedback this would be rolled out across the platform. To quote BizStone, "Search integration is a way of introducing relevancy to people. This is not just about 'What are you doing?' but about what everyone else is doing. Twitter is about finding out what is going on out there right now in real time. This is a powerful new way of repositioning the product."

The founders of Twitter has been thinking about a business model around it for long and now the search functionality seems to be the key around which they will build the business. While a few companies like Dell, Comcast, JetBlue have been monitoring Twitter for any discussion related to their company or products and also to communicate with their customers, there has been no official service from Twitter. Mr Stone said that tracking keywords for companies, giving companies an official presence on the site and helping them to introduce themselves to customers were all possible revenue generators.
